Dream Big Essay Contest, Kids 12-18

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I have been very blessed in my life and when I can I try and give back. When Nathan Webster, a friend of mine from high school, called me last year and told me of his nonprofit organization Dream Big, I was immediately interested.  It’s a great organization that I would encourage anyone that wants to make a difference in the community to get involved with. They have a essay contest going on right now for kids age 12-18 and the winner will get to spend the day with me in the studio and go to a Blazer game with me as a member of the media.  If you or someone you know want to enter get the details here.

Examining the Hansbrough Effect

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I’ve been talking about the Hansbrough Effect for years, long before that fraud of a player Tyler Hansbrough ever steped foot on the court. But I’m glad somebody has finally jumped on this bangwagon.  The Hansbrough Effect

Felony Fights

This just might be the worst thing I have ever seen. Thier website is even better. And the sad part is I’m sure these douches are making a ton of money off this. One I don’t know how this is even legal and second who the hell is buying this crap. Now I know this isn’t MMA but I have a hard time believing that the fans of the two aren’t one in the same. There is this creepy ultra violet male macho movement happening in this country that just scares the S”*t out of me. An entire generation of kids is being raised on this type of human cockfighting.  I don’t know how you stop it or even if you can, but I know this my kids won’t be watching and neither will I.

Case Of The Mondays

What I’m looking at today….

  • The Lingerie Bowl has been called off. Is anything sacred anymore?
  • Bench clearing brawls in girls high school basketball, that makes sence. and in a shocking turn both teams blame the other. Is anyone else getting to the point of not wanting thier kids to play team sports? Golf is looking better by the minute.
  • Empty net goals don’t normaly lead to bench clearing brawls, but I wish they did. This is great.
  • Who doesn’t want to see Kevin McHale rap?
  • Interesting article on the NFL Network. It’s worth a read.
  • Your Super Bowl Party may already be ruined.

The Man Knows How To Party

Monday, January 19th, 2009

I try not to get too political on my show or here on the website. I have always thought they didn’t really belong in the same forum. Sports and grab ass are my bread and butter and adding politics would be like adding mayo. Delicious yes but not on the peanut butter sandwich. But I do try to talk and write about what’s on my mind and what’s on my mind right now is political so bare with me. We are in a bit of a pickle right now as a country. We are facing some of the biggest problems this great land has ever stared down. And the decisions that are made in the coming years will have a lasting impact on all of our lives. Now I’ve made no secret as to which side of the political tetertoder that I sit. But I am not some right wing wacko that believes all democrats are of the devil. I’m a realist at heart and I believe in ideas that work no matter where they come from. I recently received a great email from a man who said that after each election regardless of who wins he says I hope he’s the best we’ve ever had. I thought that was a great philosophy and one that I will adopt. So even though I voted for the other guy, I support the new president and hope that he is as great as people are making him out to be. But we need to take a step back and relies that he hasn’t done anything yet. I was watching the pre inauguration party at the Lincoln memorial, and what a party it was. That Obama guy knows how to get it on. He had the Boss, Garth Brooks and Tiger Woods. Not to mention a crown of a couple hundred thousand. It was a sight to behold for sure. I think it’s great that so many are excited about government and wanting things to get better. But it also worries me a bit. Blind faith can be a scary thing, and I feel that a large group of us are rocking double eye patches right now. In these times we live we can’t afford to have our eyes closed. We have to be alert and on point more than ever. The future of our country depends on it. And just because a man gathers crowds and celebrities doesn’t make him a great president. We need to tone down the love fest and stop putting his face of everything from t-shirts to beer mugs. He should be judged just like any other politician, by his merits and as of yet he has none. He may turn out to be the next Lincoln, I pray to God that he does, but until he does I will reserve judgment. There is this scary feeling in the air that people believe Obama is going to come in wave a magic wand and cure all our ills. Obama won’t solve our problems. We will. As a country. I takes more than one man and any other thoughts to the contrary our dangerous and wrong. It’s ok to be excited for change and to think he’s going to be great for us, but never lose the ability to look at him and make impartial judgments based on facts not hype. If we lose that we lose everything that this country was built upon. Here’s to hoping for 4 great years. I hope he’s the best we’ve ever had, but I won’t be afraid to say he’s not.

But It was a hell of party. I will give him that.

Senior Portraits

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

On ode to senior portraits. Think back to the crappy studio or forest behind the local Fred Myer were your parents and you thought it would be good idea to squat in some bushes while rocking some rolled jeans and matching denim jacket, and then capture that moment for all time. I promise that you will recognize every one of these photos from your own tortured past or that of family or friends.

Vince Smacks Down Congress

Monday, January 12th, 2009

If anything positive has come out of the steroid scandal in sport, besides, increased revenue and record attendance its the congressional hearings that seemingly take place on a weekly basis. The unintentional comedy scale is through the roof.  Why the WWE’s hearings weren’t on TV I have no idea. You could put them on Pay Per View and I would kick in 20 bucks to watch Vince McMahon Lay into Congress. You know he’s not laying down ala Bud Selig, he’s coming out guns blazing.  They have just released the transcripts of these hearings and while they took place over a year ago, it doesn’t diminish their greatness.  I highly recommened it.

A fine selection of quotes from Mr. McMahon:

“Stop trying to put words in my mouth.”

“I’m insulted, quite frankly, sitting in front of you today by answering some of these ridiculous questions. I’m a businessman. I’m a good businessman. I do things legally. We’re a public company. We put smiles on peoples faces all over the world. That’s what we do. This is a fun business. So it seems to me that this inquiry is some sort of witch hunt.”

“I don’t get your line of questioning here. I really don’t. It is accusatory, and I find it offensive.”

“Are you trying to slap my wrists because there was some sort of, you know, provision like this? I guess that’s your opinion. If that’s what you want to do, go right ahead. It was a start.”

“I don’t care what you prefer. I’m going to answer the question the way I want to answer the question, okay? That’s what I’m going to do.”

We All Love The BCS

Monday, January 12th, 2009

This was the best part by far for SNL over the weekend. Will Forte singing about his love of the BCS. (SKip to 1:07 if you want to skip the rest of Weekend Update). I was grouting my bathroom floor when this came on, which I just hate beyond comprehention, and it made my whole evening. Watch here

It’s A Gator Nation And We’re Just Living In It

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Something had to give. Verbal jabs had been thrown back and forth for weeks. Rumor had it that the big 12 offensive juggernauts were a sham propped up by lousy defenses.  Tim Tebow apparently couldn’t start for Baylor. On Thursday night we got to put all that aside and find out who is indeed the disputed national champion. I know the system doesn’t work blah blah blah… It was a great game and I can’t say that Florida doesn’t deserve the crown after their 24-14 defensive master piece against one of the greatest offenses this game has ever seen. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking last night’s game diminishes Oklahoma’s season or that they didn’t belong. 6 inches on a couple of plays and the Sooners win that thing. Sure the Big 12 looks a little overrated right now and they probably are, but that was two deserving teams out there and one was just a little better on that particular day.  One day you will look back on that game and marvel at how many NFL Players were on that field.  There’s at least a dozen from OU alone and probably another 14 or so from the Gators.  And if you listen to Thom Brennaman Tim Tebow will elected God within the year.

I don’t want to get off on a rant here, but come on Thom, ease up a bit. I love Tebow as much as the next guy. There’s really not a lot to complain about with him. In a world full of posers masquerading as good guys who thank Christ one minute and get caught with a hooker the next he’s the genuine article.  Someone parents can point to and tell their kids that’s how you do it. Plus he’s a hell of a player, but come on now Thom, keep it in your pants. It was getting a little uncomfortable there in the 4th quarter, Even Peter King and Brett Favre were thinking you were going overboard.

Sorry, back to the game. Florida’s defense made good on its pregame boasting, Oklahoma could just stand by and watch as their 54 point per game offensive, one of the best we’ve ever seen, could only manage 14 points against a swarming athletic Florida unit. Give credit to Florida D coordinator Charlie Strong who said nobody had pressured the Sooners, that nobody has matched up man to man and challenged them and that they would.  They did and Sam Bradford and company never got comfortable and looked out of sync all night.  How many times did they show a close up on Bradford’s face and he just looked lost?  I will never forget that look. It was a look of player who knew they were in trouble and realized things were not going to end the way they thought they would.

Football games are about excreting your will and breaking the other guys.  In the second half Florida did just that. In fact they crushed it to be exact.  Sure USC and Utah and maybe even Texas have a legit gripe about being left out. But what I saw last night was a National Championship Football team. That you can’t argue.
