NFL Draft and Blazers Down 3-1

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Huge weekend with the NFL draft and the Blazers fighting for their playoff life. First let’s get to the NFL draft. I don’t want to get too much into this because who the hell really knows. You can’t really evaluate these until at least 3 years down the road, but that won’t stop me from making some general observations,

·         Al Davis is clearly insane.  I’m not even talking about the Hayward-Bay pick either. The Raiders spent a second and a fourth round pick on two players who could have been had in the 7th round.  The jumpsuit is in rare form.

·         The Browns gave up the 5th pick simply because they didn’t want to pay the number 5 pick. It’s the one thing really screwed up about the NFL.

·         How about them Ducks and Beavers? 13 players taken. These are quietly becoming two on the best mid level programs in the country.

·         Mathew Stafford just got 40 million dollars from the lions to be the next Joey Harrington.  This won’t work trust me.

·         How the hell can you grade a draft when nobody has played?  Give it time before freaking out, unless you’re a Raiders fan, you can start right now.

As for the Blazers, what can I say both of those were heart breakers. No other way to say it. You had a chance at both of those games in Houston and you let them both get away. Some thoughts from the two games follow

·         Brandon Roy is by far the best player on the floor, Houston however is the better team.

·         People are overreacting right now. The team doesn’t need to be blown up. Nate doesn’t need to fired. You were a good team before last weekend and you’re a good team now.  You just didn’t get it done down the stretch.

·         This team will only go deep into the playoffs when Greg Oden becomes a player.  As of right now he gives you nothing. He could be the difference in a series like this, but he can’t even stay on the floor and when he is in the game he brings nothing to the table. They need to sit him down on the offseason and show him this series on film and then challenge him to not let it happen again.

·         You can’t win games with 7 fourth quarter turnovers and giving up 10 offensive rebounds.

·         This team will be better off for having played against this Houston team.  Every great team has got take their lumps and this Blazer team is no different.

·         I can no longer handle the homer calls of Blazer broadcasting. I know you have to support your guys but come on boys. I like these guys as people but bitcihng and complaining and ass kissing is ridiculous.  How about a little objectivity guys. Oden has been awful, it’s ok to say.  Not every call is the worst call in the history of basketball.   I hate to say it but It’s painful at this point. I turned on the TNT broadcast about half way through game 4.

Opening Day

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

In honor of opening day, here is a little tribute to some of the most shameful ceremonial first pitches of all time.   I stand by my belief that if you can’t get the ball to the catcher you are not a man and should be banned from all sporting events for the remainder of your days, or be forced into the golf d*ck out rule and pull your pants around your ankles, walk to home plate and take your ridicule.  Have some pride people, if your asked to throw out the first pitch, before you accept make sure you can man up and get it to home plate.  I can’t seem to find the Danny Devtio clip of him throwing out the first pitch at a Reds game, the greatest pitch of all time, if somebody has this please send it my way.

Nice Little Weekend

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Just got back from a relaxing weekend with the Mrs. up that the Skamania Lodge, which I highly recommend for a cost effective close by weekend. It’s close by, reasonably priced, and has great scenery.  Their Sunday brunch is a bit spendy but worth every penny. My New Year’s resolution to be less fat took a major hit from that brunch on Sunday.  It can’t be healthy to have bacon, waffles, meat loaf, and pastries on the same plate.  But sometimes you have to give into temptations and when you’re a middle aged, balding, fat father of 3 a weekend of vacation sex and all you can eat brunch is about as good as it gets.  And I have no idea what gets into my wife when hit the road, maybe it’s that someone else is cleaning the room, but I got to find a way to bottle that and bring it home.  Needless to say, great weekend for me, but if you do go skip the moutain bikes my taint still hurts.  But even with that my weekedn was better than Zach’s.

In a shocking development, Zach Randolph got clipped for a DUI.  At the time the Blazers were mocked for getting nothing in return for this guy, now you couldn’t trade him for a ball boy and rack of balls.

If you haven’t seen the exchange between Cheryl Miller and Scott Pollard you’re missing out. It all went down on NBA TV which I’m sure nobody was watching but thank the heavens for the internet so we all can enjoy.

Baseball has started which is always a good thing. Whatever you think of the state of the game, you tell me there is something better than seeing the grass of the field as you walk up the tunnel to your seat on opening day.  I’m watching the Mets and Reds as I type this, and I don’t know why it is but as much as I love the Mets, I hate all their players. I have no faith in any of them save for David Wright. Santana is on the mound and looks great and yet I keep thinking to myself at any moment he’s going to implode.  I just don’t trust anybody on the roster. It’s a problem I need to spend some time addressing.

I saw this story and laughed over the weekend.  Take a look and tell me you’re not chuckling to yourself. The names says it all.

National Title game tonight with North Carolina and Michigan State battling it out. It just seems anti climatic to me. I don’t know if the Blazers success has killed the local buzz for this thing, but I just don’t feel any juice this year. If UNC wins I take 2nd in my company pool which should be a couple bucks, which is nice. Hopefully we get a good game, that’s all I ask, and  a UNC win so I can make some dough.
